Wig Accessories and Costume Parties

I’m a Brooklynite, and we Brooklynites know how to party in a good costume. I’ve attended countless costume parties where everyone looks so delightfully pretty and over the top. There’s always someone with a crazier outfit than my own.

For me, wig accessories are a key part of any good costume. A few weekends ago, I attended a Forbidden City party at the Imperial Palace at Sunset Park. The costume instructions were to dress in your finest Dynastic attire – we’re talking reds and yellows, robes, gowns, dragons, pandas, tigers, golden lions and other Oriental garments. I wore a long black dress, a jet black wig, and a red silk shawl draped over my shoulders. On my feet were a pair of red beaded slippers that I got cheaply in Chinatown.

Last weekend, I went to a post-Burning Man party at Times Square Arts Center featuring DJs, dancing, interactive artistic installations, and twinkling lights. The costume theme was fantastical or fantastic: elves, pixies, sprites, and anything with wings. I was a glittery, body paint-covered fairy in pink ponytail wigs and a puffy, lacy pink dress. Costume fun!
