Wig Accessories and Witches
If you were a child of the 80s or 90s, chances are you will have read “The Witches” by Roald Dahl, a fictional story about terrifying witches, who disguise themselves as regular women and turn children into mice.
Dahl describes witches as having no hair, so they wear wig accessories to cover their naked scalps, which can result in an itchy “wig rash”. Witches have long, claw-like fingernails which they hide by wearing gloves. Also, witches have no toes so their feet are wide and square, they have bluish-colored saliva, and their pupils sometimes flash and change color. So, if you see a woman on the street scratching her head, wearing gloves, appearing uncomfortable in her high heels, and looking like she might have just eaten some blueberries, chances are she might be a witch.
In the story, a young boy and his grandmother take a holiday in Bournemouth, a beautiful seaside resort town in southern England. They stay in a luxury hotel, which happens to be the venue of the annual convention of English witches, each one disguised in a human hair wig. Here, the plot turns thrilling as the young boy must fight to stop the Grand High Witch from turning him into a rodent.
